Understanding ISO 9001:2015

Clause 2 - Normative references and Clause 3 - Terms and definitions

The ISO 9000:2015 QMS – Fundamentals and vocabulary - is a reference document that describes quality management system fundamentals and vocabulary. 
Only the terms and definitions given in ISO 9000:2015 apply to ISO 9001:2015. Most times I will use ISO 9000 definitions in my explanations. Where I use an alternate definition or interpretation, I will say so and provide a reason why. There are terms that ISO 900 does not define, in such instances, I will provide definitions generally used in business and the context of how it is used within an ISO 9001 clause.  

Normative reference  means that the information (concepts, principles and definitions) should be understood and applied as defined or explained in ISO 9000. It is quite possible that such information may have different meaning or interpretation in some industries, regulatory or business context. 

Indispensable for its application’ means that the concepts, definitions, principles provided by ISO 9001 are vital to understanding the requirements of ISO 9001 and crucial to applying and implementing its requirements. I am not sure I agree with the phrase as ISO standards are always lagging behind current business concepts and norms.  

In any case, we should refer to the latest version of ISO 9000; in this case the 2015 version.
